Injury Update: Del Rio ‘highly doubtful’ for Vanderbilt game

Florida quarterback Luke Del Rio (USA Today Sports)

After making the trip to Knoxville this past weekend but not being available to play against Tennessee, redshirt sophomore quarterback Luke Del Rio (sprained MCL) is “highly doubtful” to play on Saturday against Vanderbilt, Florida head coach Jim McElwain said Monday.

However, McElwain said he still will not count him out for this weekend.

“Luke, he won’t do anything today,” McElwain said. “We’ll try to ease him in a little bit on Tuesday. There again, keeping him involved in the game plan. Part of the reason we had him dressed and kind of at the last game was I really felt he did a great job with Austin (Appleby) on the sideline. I think he was really good for our team. Said a few words in the locker room, as well. I think that really resonated with some guys. He’s a valuable piece in this.”

Appleby filled in for Del Rio in the Tennessee contest, throwing for 296 yards and three touchdowns against one interception on 23-of-39 passing.

Meanwhile, starting nose tackle Joey Ivie “busted up a thumb,” according to McElwain, and is expected out against Vanderbilt. “Should know more about that. Right now, he’d be out,” McElwain added.

Right guard Tyler Jordan (eye), who has missed the past two games, will return to practice this week but in a limited, non-contact capacity. “Won’t know anything there until Thursday,” McElwain said.

Cornerback Quincy Wilson (leg) will miss practice Monday and likely Tuesday, McElwain said. He added that Wilson will be a “Wednesday decision.” Defensive end Jordan Sherit is dealing with a leg injury, but McElwain doesn’t expect him being out this weekend.

“This guy plays the game the way it should be played,” McElwain said of Sherit. "Consistently does his job. He’s still a little banged up with that leg, but I say that and I don’t anticipate him missing, just because of who he is and how he goes about his daily business.”
