Redshirt junior quarterback Luke Del Rio will undergo surgery on his throwing shoulder on Wednesday, Florida head coach Jim McElwain said.

“It's going in to clean it up,” McElwain said. “You've heard me say it before, but this guy played and didn't bow out. Here's the thing good thing, we're going in and getting him fixed right."

Earlier this offseason on Jan. 18, Del Rio underwent surgery on his non-throwing shoulder - a procedure that would sideline him for the spring. McElwain said that Del Rio should be good to go by fall camp.

"He'll be fine,” McElwain said. “It's not major, you what I mean. Going in and fixing the other one that's broken, so.”

Playing through shoulder injuries later on in the 2016 season, and a sprained MCL in his knee that he suffered three games into the season, Del Rio finished with 1,358 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in six appearances as a redshirt sophomore. While he misses the spring, redshirt freshmen Feleipe Franks, Kyle Trask and freshman Kadarius Toney have received the snaps at the quarterback position.

McElwain also said Tuesday that redshirt freshman wide receiver Rick Wells (leg) and redshirt junior offensive lineman Kavaris Harkless (leg) remain sidelined. Wells’ spring is presumably done after he underwent surgery that “went great,” according to McElwain.

Wells, a four-star signee and 2016 summer enrollee, redshirted last year after missing much of fall camp and the start of the season with a hamstring injury. Without Wells and Freddie Swain (leg), and Dre Massey (torn ACL) non-contact, Florida has just four fully available wideouts this spring: Antonio Callaway, Tyrie Cleveland, Brandon Powell and Joshua Hammond.

This past season Harkless appeared in seven games as a reserve, rounding out Florida’s rotation.

Tuesday morning, defensive end Jordan Sherit (knee) provided an update on his recovery. Sherit, who has been sidelined this spring, underwent surgery following the 2016 regular season.
