Florida has made good use of its indoor practice facility during the first couple days of fall camp while the weather in Gainesville hasn't been the friendliest for outside football. However, the Gators held their Monday afternoon practice at the lacrosse fields at Donald R. Dizney Stadium despite rainy conditions.
During Florida's full-pads practice Monday, Gators head coach Jim McElwain felt his group learned some valuable lessons and was pleased with how many of his players fought through the adverse conditions. However, he added that "the execution part today was not great at all."
"Glad I wasn’t throwing the ball today because it became very heavy and we gotta do a better job keeping the balls dry," McElwain quipped. "Today, obviously kind of wanted to get outside and play in the elements a little bit. It’s kind of interesting when there’s distractions, one of the things we talked about quite a bit, we talked about last year is trying to create chaos. Whether it is other things going on that force you to focus on the details that help you with each individual play and the execution part.
"It was a great learning experience to understand you can’t allow external distractions, in anything that you do, hinder your performance. I thought there was a little of that going on."
The topics of quarterbacks came up again during McElwain's press conference, and the second-year Gators head coach was asked whether it's too early to name Luke Del Rio the quarterback. McElwain replied that it's too early now in camp to reach any conclusions at the position.
"Let’s see, we’ve had two practices in underwear, two practices in some shoulder pads and one in a torrential downpour," McElwain said. "So, yeah I don’t think it’s fair. I’d say the last two practices, he (Del Rio) made a couple mistakes that were unacceptable for the way that we expect the way the position to be played. And so, we got a ways to go. Good thing we got practice.”
Asked again whether he'd like to name a starter at the position before the season-opener, McElwain replied, "No, I'm fine."
"Get somebody in there and go move the ball. That’s it," he continued. "Tell you quite honestly, I’m more worried about the people around him. We’ve gotta play better in the O-line. We do. We’ve gotta play better at receiver from a consistency standpoint. And we’ve gotta give the opportunity for those running backs to go make some plays. That’s my big concern right now."
After McElwain felt the Gators did a "heck of a job up front" during Sunday's practice in pads, he commended the play of sophomore offensive lineman Martez Ivey and freshman offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor but noted that he's looked for more out of his offensive line as a whole.
"We need to get some other guys up there to say, you know what, it’s okay to come off the ball, play with pad level and not maybe be passive, if that’s a good word," McElwain said.
Florida will begin two-a-days Tuesday with a morning practice and then one in the evening before taking Wednesday off.
"Get an opportunity to go in the morning, probably go in spiders in the morning and then try to simulate that kickoff time with the even practice a little bit as we move forward to get used to different start times throughout the year," McElwain said.
