Former Florida head coach Jim McElwain issued a statement via Twitter about his parting with UF while athletic director Scott Stricklin was speaking with the media.
"I want to thank the University of Florida, the fans and alumni for the opportunity to have been your head coach," the statement read. "My family and I will move forward with appreciation and good memories."
A second portion of the statement, addressed to Gators players, read, "Thank you for working hard and giving it your all. I love each and every one of you."
Florida announced a mutual parting between McElwain and the University Athletic Association Sunday afternoon. In two-plus seasons, McElwain was 22-12 as coach of the Gators.
Stricklin told reporters Sunday evening that McElwain has yet to meet with the players, but the opportunity remains available. In the interim, defensive coordinator Randy Shannon will serve as head coach.
Florida is currently 3-4 and 3-3 in the SEC. The Gators lost to Georgia 42-7 on Saturday in Jacksonville.
