In the span of two seasons, the Florida Gators have improved from failing to make the NIT to not only making the Big Dance, but fighting all the way to the Elite Eight. Despite the quick turnaround, however, third-year coach Mike White refuses to call it his program.
“Not my program. I'm just renting it right now,” White said at Tuesday’s basketball media day. “You guys are just accepting me for the time being.”
White used his recruiting pitch to further explain his point.
“I said it when I first got here and I said it to recruits from day one. Florida's always going to win in all sports,” White said. “We are. It's the standard here. The level of excellence in this athletic department is off the charts. Florida won before Coach [Billy] Donovan. Coach [Lon] Kruger went to the Final Four. Coach Donovan had an amazing run. Florida's going to win after I'm gone. They just are.”
