Notebook: Del Rio out for the year

Inside the Gators

No. 21 Florida improved to 3-1 overall 3-0 in conference play Saturday, but the 38-24 win over Vanderbilt came at a cost. Starting quarterback Luke Del Rio is finished for the season, according to head coach Jim McElwain.

“Injury wise, Luke will be done,” McElwain said. “He’ll have surgery on Monday. And he was doing a good job, but Feleipe [Franks] came in, took care of business. Thought he handled it well. Obviously that drive right before the half was huge.”

Del Rio will have surgery on his collarbone, according to McElwain. The redshirt junior quarterback had been named the starter after rallying the team from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter at Kentucky. In Del Rio’s absence, it will be all hands on deck at quarterback.

“We’ll get him (Franks) and Malik [Zaire] ready to roll,” McElwain said. “Obviously, expanding the package with Kadarius [Toney] bit by bit back there as well. That’ll be something that’ll continue as we look and just see how he handles it, in feeding it bit by bit as we move through the season.”
