GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Tommy Townsend gets asked a lot about his brother, with Johnny Townsend spending five years in Gainesville and breaking just about every record in the book. Replacing him would be intimidating no matter who takes over, even more so as his little brother, but Tommy says that's really not the case at all.

"Not really,” Townsend said. “There's always people asking me about it all the time. But like I said, I'm just trying to go out there and kick the best that I can possibly kick."

Tommy made a comparison to a teammate in the same boat as him trying to branch out and make a name for himself.

"I'm not really thinking too much about his stats,” Townsend said of his brother. “I'm just going out there and trying to do the best that I can do and go from there. I saw someone, it was actually Nick de la Torre put a tweet out quoting Marco Wilson how he was saying he's his own guy, he's his own player.

”I agree completely with that; I'm in the same shoes as him. People are looking at me to fill Johnny's shoes and people are looking at Marco to fill his (Quincy's) shoes. We're both just trying to come out here and play the best we can play."

Now under new head coach Dan Mullen, Townsend says he's “amped” to strap up the cleats and showcase his talent. There's been a different type of energy since Mullen came aboard, and Townsend also says everyone is buying in just well.

“I love coach Mullen, honestly,” Townsend said. “The first meeting we had with coach Mullen, he came in and he was talking to the team.

”Honestly, it’s a little cheesy but I got chills. I got amped, I was ready to go. I was super stoked when he came in. He’s a very high-energy guy. I think he’s getting us going in the right direction. I’m just really excited for the future seasons to come.”
