When Florida announced Dan Mullen as its new head coach on Sunday, fans immediately had one burning question: who will be his quarterback? Mullen is known as a quarterback whisperer, but the quarterbacks he inherits were recruited with a different offense in mind. Through recruiting and transfers, however, Mullen can quickly add signal-callers suited to run his offense.
Inside the Gators looks at some of Mullen’s options for the 2018 season.
ON ROSTER AND RETURNING
Mullen inherits a squad with three underclassmen scholarship quarterbacks: Jake Allen, Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask. All three were recruited as pro-style passers by the former staff.
In his Monday press conference, Mullen named six things he looks for in a quarterback, in order: toughness, leadership, decision-making ability, intelligence, passing ability and running ability. Mullen called a quarterback’s ability to run a “bonus” on Monday, but in reality, it’s a requirement (or at least strong preference). At Mississippi State, Mullen had his quarterback run the ball more than 10 times per game in all but two seasons (2009, 2012).
