Iverson Clement knows where he wants to play football over the next three to four years.
After sending out a series of cryptic tweets over the past week hinting at a decision, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound all-purpose back out of Mount Holly (N.J.) Rancocas Valley Regional will make his commitment public tonight at 7 p.m.
Schools from across the country pursued the talented New Jersey native, including the likes of Baylor, Florida, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Tennessee and Virginia Tech, among others.
Clement has ultimately narrowed things down between two schools, Florida and Michigan State.
Marcus Hammond, Clement’s 7-on-7 coach and mentor, explained what stood out about each school to his pupil.
Florida: “Some people wanted him as a wide receiver. The first thing they said when we got there in March was they wanted to clear the air, you’re a running back if you come here. No let’s see what happens if we move him to DB. No let’s see what happens if we move him to slot receiver. They wanted him to know upfront he is a running back if he goes to Florida.”
Michigan State: “Michigan State said Iverson reminded them of Le’Veon Bell and he ate it up. They just offered him and he was high on them. He knew they put running backs in the league. He’s a patient runner. If you watch Le’Veon, he sets up his blocks, he’s got that great vision, that’s one thing that Iverson does.”
Whichever school lands the four-star running back will have plenty to work with according to Hammond.
“He has the best of both worlds. He has the size to run through guys if needed to, and he has the burst to run away from them. You need that.”
Not only is Clement impressive on the field, he stands out off of it as well.
“His mindset is, if he wants to do something, he can probably be the best at it,” Hammond said. “He is a passionate kid. He is a competitive passionate kid. If you play basketball he wants to win. If you play paper, rock, scissors, he wants to win. When he’s in a relaxed environment, he’s always cracking jokes, he’s always smiling. It’s very rare that you see the kid without a smile.”
Clement will not be the only one smiling after tonight, as the school of his choice is sure to be smiling back.
