Film Room: Four key defensive plays
Ian Wharton
Special to Inside the Gators

The contest between the Florida Gators and Vanderbilt Commodores was expected to be a gritty, defensive battle as neither team had broken the 30-point barrier against FBS competition prior to this match-up.

Vegas agreed, setting the line on the combined score at a mere 39 points, which the Gators nearly covered themselves. For Florida to avoid a home upset, it took great play from the secondary to finish the upstart Vanderbilt program in the fourth quarter.

Vanderbilt’s quarterback play had been much more efficient as junior Kyle Shurmur has become adept at avoiding turnovers and executing a ball-control offense, sans his Alabama performance. With a final stat-line of 18-for-40, the Gators secondary won the most important battle of the day for the defense. More specifically, it was the five pass breakups that highlighted how this swarming unit was and will continue to be a difference-maker.
