Despite having a couple of highly sought after commitments on board already, Florida is still on the look out for top tier defensive backs to close out this recruiting cycle. The Gators hosted one of the newest targets on the board over this past weekend when Covington (Ga.) Eastside athlete Eric Stokes visited Florida for the first time ever.

“It was a great visit,” said Stokes. “I got to see the whole city of Gainesville. The campus and eat breakfast at the head coach's house. I got to hangout with some of the players and of course chill at The Swamp. I would rate the visit a 10 out of 10.”

Though he is listed as an athlete, the Gators like this Peach State speedster at the cornerback position. Naturally the coach Stokes spent most of his time with while in town was defensive backs coach Torrian Gray.

The main pitch from Gray was the early playing time Florida will be able to offer prospects in the Class of 2017.

“It was good talking to Coach Gray,” explained Stokes. “He says that they’re losing three defensive backs this year and he would love to have me there. He said he can see me playing either nickel or corner since I’m a raw talent. He is going to tell you how it is no matter what. He’s not going to hold anything back from you. I think we’re real cool with each other too.”

During Stokes talks Florida head man Jim McElwain he also heard the same sales pitch, the Gators have a big need in the secondary.

“Coach McElwain basically said the same thing that Coach Gray was saying,” added Stokes. “He said they didn’t bring many defensive backs in last year and they need some badly.”

While on campus the 6-foot, 170-pounder was also able to bond with a couple of Florida’s current players as well. According to Stokes his player hosts was defensive back Jeawon Taylor, who shared his freshman season experiences with Stokes.

“I liked getting to hang out with the players, they have only been there a year and you couldn’t tell by how they acted,” he Stokes of his player hosts. “They acted like people that been with each others for years. They were telling me things like how I will see playing time as soon as I get there.”

The Gators are the only school thus far to host Stokes on campus for an official visit, but plans to see Georgia and Ole Miss over the next two weekends leading up to signing day. With visits still left on tap Stokes is staying away from naming leaders.

“It’s hard to say cause I haven’t took any other official visits.”
