Seemingly lost in the shuffle Monday was the major story that freshman running back Malik Davis is out for the season. Davis injured his right knee in the first quarter of Florida's 42-7 loss to Georgia Saturday in Jacksonville.

In his first press conference as interim head coach, Randy Shannon confirmed the news. Losing Davis is a tough blow to a struggling offense. The rookie ball-carrier is Florida's leading rusher, recording 526 yards on 79 carries (6.66 yards per carry).

Davis and sophomore Lamical Perine (79 carries, 365 yards, 6 TD) made for an effective one-two punch on the ground. Perine will now become the primary running back. Shannon has made it clear who he's looking for to step up in Davis' absence.

"It's a big blow for us because he was an explosive running back," Shannon said of Davis' injury. "But also, you know, it's time for Mark Thompson to step up. He's a senior. He's a guy that's 6-2, 240, runs 4.4. It's his opportunity to come in and play."

Thompson says he's ready to answer the call.
