The Jim McElwain era at Florida ended abruptly on Sunday. As the Gators and their fans look to move forward, Inside the Gators offers some final thoughts on McElwain’s tenure of two-plus seasons as UF's head coach.
Here are the five defining moments of the McElwain era:
1. CLARIBELLE
At his introductory press conference, McElwain tried to be folksy and witty when expressing confidence in his offense. Instead, he gave rivals and disgruntled Gators fans alike a go-to punchline.
"You got to understand this, I believe I can win with my dog Claribelle," McElwain said when asked about quarterbacks. "That's the attitude. There are good players here. That's just our responsibility to get that going."
McElwain coached 34 games at Florida. For the first six, he looked like a quarterback guru as Will Grier guided the team to a 6-0 start. Following Grier’s suspension, however, the offense never looked the same. As Treon Harris, Luke Del Rio, Austin Appleby and Feleipe Franks struggled, fans wondered if Claribelle should get a turn.
At the time of his hiring, McElwain's confidence was appreciated. As the coach struggled to win with multiple Elite 11 quarterbacks, however, the Claribelle quip didn’t age well.
