Two questions entering SEC Media Days for Florida head coach Jim McElwain concerned two of his wide receivers, junior Antonio Callaway and freshman James Robinson.
After a May citation for marijuana possession – his second marijuana-related incident as a Gator – Callaway’s status for Florida’s season-opener against Michigan on Sept. 2 remains up in the air.
Meanwhile, Robinson is the lone 2017 signee who hasn’t arrived on campus yet, as he waits to be academically cleared in order to enroll. He was unable to join the team for the start of Summer B classes on June 26.
When discussing both wideouts Tuesday, McElwain didn’t have all that much to say.
As far as Callaway, McElwain didn’t discuss his status for the season-opener, noting that there’s no reason to speculate with the beginning of the season eight Saturdays away.
"He's going through some things right now, and so far he's been doing a good job," McElwain said about Callaway.
Regarding Robinson, McElwain noted, “That’s something that's NCAA and a lot of that stuff. We’ll see what happens there.”
However, McElwain had plenty of praise to offer for the wide receiver room as a whole when meeting with the media Tuesday.
"I really felt that, just going through spring practice, that Florida speed is back," McElwain said. "I think we're a much faster football team in a lot of those ways. I say that only having sat on the other sideline having those guys give you windburn when they're running by you. I'm excited about that group as well."
SCHEDULING LSU FOR HOMECOMING
UF made headlines last week, for obvious reasons after last year's notorious postponement debacle, when it announced that its Oct. 7 matchup with LSU in The Swamp would be its 2017 Homecoming game.
On Tuesday, McElwain clarified that he was not behind the decision.
"No, in fact I just heard about it when I got off the plane back from Montana. That's the first I heard about it," he said. "That's something that - you guys probably don't understand, maybe it's because I'm not Coach Saban at Alabama - I don't get those decisions. That's something the school does based on their alumni. I heard that this question might be coming up and I said, 'Who are we playing for our Homecoming?' I guess we're playing them."
