As Keon Zipperer lined up for a 1-on-1 drill, those spectators observing from the sidelines and the coaches in attendance at the Sophomore Sensation Camp fixated their eyes on the four-star prospect.
The 6-foot-3, 230 pound tight-end did a quick fake outside, created separation, and flew down the middle of the field. What was an overthrown ball mattered little to Zipperer as he picked up speed as the ball was in the air and finished the play with a beautiful one-hand catch.
This play fascinated those observing him, and they quickly wanted to know where the star tight-end was from. The answer to that question is Lakeland, Florida, and if things go the way Zipperer wants them to go, he won’t be leaving the Sunshine State once his high school days are finished.
When asked where the University of Florida stands on his radar, Zipperer quickly responded, “Florida stands number one.” He continued by saying, “Clemson is right behind them. It’s like tied with Clemson.”
Zipperer, however, reaffirmed his love for the Gators. “I’ve been liking them since I was little. It’s my dream school.”
Another reason why Florida is appealing to Zipperer is the possibility of playing with his former high school teammate, James Robinson, who signed with the Gators but has yet to report to campus.
Of Robinson, Zipperer said, “James is like my big brother. We talk a lot. We already played together, so it’s nothing different.”
Zipperer praised the Gator coaches and the Indoor Practice Facility, but he also spoke positively about the city of Gainesville. He said, “It’s good. I got people that grew up here. I’ve been up here a lot; I just haven’t been to the school. But I feel good about it.”
Although Florida is at the top of Zipperer’s list, that won’t stop him from watching other colleges play. He said, “I want to go see North Carolina play. I want to see Auburn play. And of course, I’m going to come to Florida games.”
Zipperer will be a Junior this year and as such he likely won’t make his college decision until next year. For now, at least, the Florida Gators rank at the top of his list.
