Knox Notebook: Three or four backs to get carries each game

Inside the Gators

Greg Knox is entering his 24th season as a coach in the Southeastern Conference. Knox began his SEC tenure under Tommy Tuberville as Ole Miss’ wide receivers coach from 1995-1998. When Tuberville left for Auburn, Knox followed. He joined the Tigers’ coaching staff in the same capacity, staying at Auburn from 1999 until Tuberville’s departure in 2008. Since then, Knox has worked under Dan Mullen for 9 years, serving as Mississippi State’s running backs coach from 2009-2017 and their special teams coordinator from 2014-2017. To Knox, it’s all about loyalty.

“I told Dan [Mullen] when he hired me, number one thing was loyalty and I’m not a guy that jumps around, I don’t go chasing jobs,” Knox said. “This is my 24th season in the SEC and it’s under two coaches, so, I’m big on loyalty and he is also. So, I think that right off the bat connected us together and has been tremendous ever since.”

Knox’s relationship with Mullen started with a phone call on a car ride from Auburn to Mobile for Senior Bowl practices. Little did Knox know that the call would change the course of his career for the next decade.

“We [Tuberville’s staff] had gotten let go at Auburn and I was actually on my way down to the Senior Bowl. I was headed down to the Senior Bowl, watching those senior practices, talked with some NFL scouts and he [Dan Mullen] called. I was about halfway to Mobile, and he called me and I turned around. [I] put a coat and tie on, met him in Birmingham and the rest is history.”
